There are many ways to help athletes with our year-round sports competitions. Special Olympics South Dakota offers three roles for certified volunteers.

Chaperone: No sport skills required; assists coaches or head of delegation with various tasks.

Certified Coach: Sports skills and training required. This role does require continuing education every three years.

Head of Delegation: Sports skills and training required. This level of coach is in charge of the delegation. This role does require continuing education every three years.

Class A Volunteer Form

All Special Olympics South Dakota coaches must be Level 1 certified and all Head Coaches & Head of Delegtaions must be Level 2 certified. Your coach’s education is good for three years and can be recertified at any time.

Athletes, Unified partners, coaches, volunteers, family members and spectators all have a code of conduct. By participating in Special Olympics in any of these roles, a person agrees to abide by applicable code of conduct, and are subject to disciplinary actions if behavior or actions go against any of these descriptions.

Powerlifting competition takes place in March.

 

Special Olympics South Dakota Powerlifting Handbook

The Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Powerlifting shall govern all Special Olympics competitions. As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created these rules based upon the International Powerlifting (IFP) rules for Powerlifting found at www.powerlifting-ipf.com.

Registrations will be due to Cade Lyon at clyon@sosd.org on February 2.

Basketball

  • Team Basketball: 5-on-5, 3-on-3
  • Unified Team Basketball: 5-on-5, 3-on-3
  • Individual Basketball Skills Contest: target pass, 10m dribble, spot shot
  • Team Basketball Skills Contest: contest is made up of two halves consisting of five rounds each, each player on the five-member team attempts to catch the ball and throw it accurately to the player in the next position, last person on the free throw line will attempt to shoot.

Special Olympics South Dakota Basketball Handbook

The Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Basketball shall govern all Special Olympics competitions. As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created rules based on the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) rules for basketball. FIBA or National Governing Body (NGB) rules shall be employed except when they conflict with the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Basketball or Article 1. Special Olympics South Dakota adheres to Special Olympics Rules for Basketball except in certain instances.

Registrations will be due to your Area Director on January 26th.

Cheer

  • Beginner – Competition shall consist of each squad of cheerleaders performing three cheers in a time limit of 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  • Intermediate – Competition shall consist of each squad of cheerleaders performing a music routine as well as three cheers in a time limit of 2 minutes.
    • Routines can consist of choreographed performances, yells, jumps, high kicks, somersaults, and gymnastics moves.
Competition Season

Cheerleading competition season takes place from January through March.

Special Olympics South Dakota Cheer Handbook

The Special Olympics South Dakota Cheer Handbook, and SOSD rules and guidelines will govern all cheer competitions sanctioned by SOSD.

All cheerleaders should receive proper training before attempting any form of cheerleading gymnastics (e.g. tumbling, partner stunts, and jumps).

Registrations will be due to your Area Director on January 26th.

Special Olympics South Dakota Bocce Handbook

The International Federation of Bocce is Special Olympics Inc. and therefore the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Bocce shall govern all Special Olympics or competitions.

Registrations will be due to your Area Director on July 27th.

The Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Softball shall govern all Special Olympics competitions. As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created these rules based upon World Softball Confederation (WSBC) Rules for slow pitch softball found at http://www.internationalsoftball.com/. ISF or National Governing Body (NGB) rules shall be employed except when they are in conflict with the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Softball or Article I. In such cases, the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Softball shall apply.

Registrations will be due to your Area Director on July 27th.

Special Olympics South Dakota Equestrian Handbook

The Special Olympics Sports Rules shall govern all Special Olympics equestrian sports competitions. As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created these rules based on Federation Equestre Internationale (FEL), American Horse Shows Association (AHSA), and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) rules for equestrian sports competition.

Registrations will be due to your Area Director on June 24th.
