Team South Dakota will be made up of 42 Athletes, 9 Unified Partners, and 13 Coaches.  Here is the breakdown:

Athletes/Unified Partners

Criteria for Athlete/Unified Partner Selection

Athletes selected to represent Team South Dakota at the 2018 USA Games must demonstrate good sportsmanship, dedication to training, desire to excel in sports, an understanding of the rules of the sport, and the ability to function well as a part of a team.  Athletes must not only be dedicated to their sport, but must also have the ability to commit extra time to training, travel to training camps and competition, and be involved in other training activities as determined by SOSD.

Before completing this information sheet, it is important to understand that if you are filling this out for an athlete, you are making a commitment on behalf of the athlete whose name appears on the form, as well as the family and local coach.  All information collected will be kept strictly confidential.

In order to be eligible for the 2018 USA Games, South Dakota athletes must meet the following criteria:

  1. Athlete must have participated in Special Olympics for at least 2 years prior to the competition. 
  2. Unified Partners must be a registered Class A Volunteer (See Become a Volunteer)
  3. The athlete must be a medal winner (first, second or third place) in the sport/event that he/she wishes to apply in.
  4. Must be available and willing to commit to training programs and attend training camps prior to Games.
  5. Possess the skills to be able to function as part of a team (e.g., cooperation, sharing, group living, following directions, appropriate basic social skills, flexibility, handling stress well, etc.).
  6. Has demonstrated good sportsmanship in previous competitions.
  7. Be able to travel away from home for an extended period of time.
  8. Must be self-sufficient (little or no assistance) in bodily functions, dressing, and bathing.
  9. Cannot be on medications which cannot be handled by the athlete and/or coach.
  10. Must be 12 years of age or older.
  11. Must be able to abstain from the use of tobacco products and the consumption of alcoholic beverages throughout camps and games.

NOTE:      Selection will be reviewed and finalized by the Special Olympics South Dakota Games Committee.

Coaches

Criteria for Coaches Selection

Coaches selected to represent South Dakota at the 2018 USA Games must be well educated in coaching and demonstrate qualities that include sportsmanship, dedication to quality training, understand the rules of the sport, and have the ability to function well as a part of a team.  All selected coaches will serve a dual role of both coach and chaperone.

Before completing an application, it is important to understand the commitment necessary to be part of the coaching staff for SOSD.  Coaches’ responsibilities are outlined below.  All information collected during the application process will be kept strictly confidential.

In order to be eligible for the 2018 USA Games, South Dakota coaches must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a Special Olympics South Dakota Level 3 Certified Coach. (See Become a Coach)
  2. Must be a registered Class A Volunteer.  (See Become a Volunteer)
  3. Demonstrated commitment to Special Olympics through active participation in the sport they wish to coach for a minimum of two years.
  4. Be available for the duration of competition plus training camps prior to games.
  5. Be in good health and able to withstand weather conditions associated with the sport.
  6. Be 21 years of age or older.
  7. Must abide by the SOSD Coaches Code of Ethics.
  8. Have previous experience chaperoning Special Olympics Athletes on an overnight stay.
  9. Possess the skills to successfully function as a member of a team (i.e., handle stress well, flexibility, possess and respect leadership, positive attitude, etc.).
  10. Provide for the general welfare, safety, health and well-being of each Special Olympics Athlete.
  11. Must be willing to commit to maintaining ongoing contact with assigned athletes, their family/guardians, and their local coach to make various arrangements and to obtain needed information.
  12. Must be willing and able to serve as both a sport specific coach and an athlete chaperone for all activities leading up to and during the games.  Understand you are committed to chaperoning on a 24-hour basis from the time you meet your athletes until the time they return home.
  13. Must be able to distribute prescribed medication to athletes (as needed).
  14. Must abstain from the use of tobacco products, except in designated smoking areas, and drinking alcoholic beverages.
  15. Willing and able to attend SOSD’s athlete draw/selection process in May.
