Athlete Application Information

World Games Dates: October 16-24, 2027

Special Olympics South Dakota is now accepting applications from athletes who are interested in being considered for Special Olympics USA at the 2027 Special Olympics World Games.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applications must:

Be at least 16 years of age.
Be female.
Have a valid passport or be able to obtain one.
Be a current Special Olympics South Dakota registered athlete and remain active through the conclusion of the 2027 World Games.
Have a current medical and release form on file.
Have competed in athletics during the qualifying period of January 2026 – June 2026.
Have participated in athletics for a minimum of two years.
Demonstrate good sportsmanship and adhere to the Special Olympics South Dakota Athlete Code of Conduct.
Be able to tolerate a 10+ hour nonstop travel day (primarily by air) independently or with minimal supervision.
Be able to independently manage all personal hygiene needs, including toileting and showering.
Have reliable transportation to and from all required practices, competitions, meetings, and promotional events.

Time Commitment

Athletes selected for Special Olympics USA must commit to:

Serving from August 2026 (upon selection) through November 2027, including post-Games evaluation.
Attending all required trainings determined by the coaching staff.
Participating in the Mandatory Team Trials – September 17-20, 2026, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Travel with Special Olympics USA to the Host Town Program and the 2027 World Games (October 16-24, 2027). Additional travel days before and after the Games should be expected.
Remaining with the delegation for the entire duration of all Games-related activities.
Participating in regular virtual meetings and conference calls with coaches.
Attending Special Olympics South Dakota promotional events related to World Games.

Financial Information:

Special Olympics South Dakota, in a joint effort with the athlete selected, will fundraise to cover all expenses associated with participation.
